Module 0 – Introduction

Before exploring in detail the economic models of platforms, interface design, or digital content strategies, it is important to establish a few foundational concepts.
The term attention economy is now widely present in public debates. It appears in media discussions, political discourse or educational conversations surrounding young people’s digital practices. Yet the concept often remains vague or reduced to overly simplistic explanations : screen addiction, declining concentration, lack of individual self-control.
This introductory module instead proposes taking a step back to better understand what is actually at stake behind these debates. It pursues three main objectives:
The objective is not to demonise screens or prescribe universal rules for digital use. Rather, it is to provide teachers with analytical tools to better understand the system and support students in developing their own understanding of it.
Module 0 therefore functions as an entry point : it establishes the conceptual foundations necessary for exploring the attention economy before moving toward the more detailed analysis developed in the following modules.
Understanding the attention economy
Explore what attention actually is, how it became an economic resource, and why digital environments are now designed to capture it.
Building on young people’s digital practices
Examine young people’s digital uses in order to better understand what they actually do online and move beyond common stereotypes or misconceptions.
Decoding alarmist discourses
Take critical distance from narratives about “screen addiction” or “dopamine” and examine what scientific research actually says about these issues.
Teaching the attention economy in the classroom
Discover concrete educational approaches for discussing the attention economy with students and fostering a constructive, reflective pedagogical posture.
